Clinton Defeat

Written by Barns on June 4, 2008 – 9:49 am

My Toastmasters speech last night tasked me with delivering a news editorial for three minutes, concentrating at the camera. This proved to be a very difficult exercise as speakers are not trained to speak to static objects from a seated position.

I presented my editorial on the demise of Senator Clinton against Barack Obama in the race for the Democratic nomination. I still believe that Hillary would have been a better candidate. On a political standing, I believe that it has something to do with me being a pessimist and that I am concerned about Obama’s experience. Of course, this can easily be argued the other way as well.

Despite this, I am all for the Democrats to win in November and with Obama well in is campaign.

Cyberspace in Social Change

Written by Barns on May 27, 2008 – 12:59 pm

One of my colleagues blogged about the use of Social Media for Social Change as discussed by Sarah Perez in her discussion of the Twitter “Twit-out” and her concern at why Internet users are concentrating their efforts to such a minor world event and not concentrating their efforts on the wide variety of human plights round the world.

I cannot agree more on the jist of her post, and considering Mathe’s research into the use of technology to assist in the plight of some of the worlds problems. However, let us not get so involved in using the social media to further causes that we forget to do our bit elsewhere. The comments by Sebastian on Sarah’s post highlight an alternate view, even though I feel that it is misguided.

Let us be aware of what we can do, both in cyberspace and IRL (in real life).
